Spring, from Four Seasons of Hope (Silver), 2012
By Robert Indiana (1928-2018)
Robert Indiana, born Robert Clark in 1928, adopted his home state’s name after moving to New York in 1954. Unlike many Pop artists focused on consumerism, Indiana’s work often carried political and personal undertones, shaped by his Depression-era upbringing and the tumult of WWII and Vietnam. His art, such as American Dream I (1960-61), questioned the true meaning of the ‘American Dream,’ blending commercial signage with social commentary.
Indiana, also a sculptor and printmaker, created the Four Seasons of Hope series in 2011 for New York’s Four Seasons Hotel. The series reworks his famous LOVE motif, which he originally designed for a 1965 Christmas card commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art. This image became a symbol of the 1960s' idealism, intertwined with political and religious themes.
